Rebuilding Dublin

The Celtic Tiger has left parts of Dublin in poor condition.  The amount of derelict land left around Dolphin's Barn, Cork Street, the Liberties and other places, caused by greedy speculators and developers buying properties and houses and then letting them rot, in the hope that they would make money by building shoebox apartments to sell at extortionate prices.

As well as this, communities have been pulled apart as children have been forced to move to Kildare and the Midlands as they can't afford to live locally.  There are also a lack of playgrounds and open spaces to bring children up.

On the other hand, Irelands biggest Tourist attraction lies right in the middle of Dublin 8.  There is a rich heritage of Georgian houses and the area which has been part of the fibre of Dublin living for 1000 years, is steeped in history.

One thing we could do is start having some of the Georgian houses rebuilt both as places for people to live and as museums or tourist attractions.

Vacant lots could be taken over by the Corpo (City Council) and handed over to local people as community gardens.  (This idea has been working in Chicago, see FoodFirst)

Of course, we would also need an improvement in our footpaths and signposts so that locals and tourists can get around, as well as finding where they want to go.

These changes would bring jobs into this corner of the city and help to start rebuild the community.
